Time Limited Schema Therapy

Janis Briedis, Helen Startup

13 Mar 2023

Introduction

This workshop will provide an overview of a time-limited schema therapy model for the conceptualization and treatment of clients presenting with complex Axis 1 presentations, such as chronic depression, entrenched GAD, OCD, social and health anxiety, as well as cases with multiple diagnoses or where no one clear diagnosis can be identified. The workshop is suitable for clinicians wishing to learn more about how to augment time limited work where presentations are complicated by histories of trauma, relational difficulties, mode shifting, ‘therapy interfering behaviours’ and treatment-resistant patterns.

The event will be equivalent to 5.1/2 hrs of CPD.

Content

The workshop will provide an overview of the core concepts of schema theory including the concepts of unmet need, schemas, schema coping styles, modes, and how to explore these using appropriate assessment tools. Delegates will learn how to conceptualise complexity and internal relationships among ‘part selves’ using a schema therapy ‘mode map’. A treatment overview will be presented of a Time limited (6-12 months of therapy) Shema Therapy treatment approach. Presenters will introduce delegates to all of the key schema therapy change techniques - limited reparenting, empathic confrontation, imagery techniques and chair work – as well as discussing when and how to integrate these into Time-limited Schema Therapy. The dilemmas of working with trauma within a time limited model will be considered. Case material will be used to bring to life this treatment approach and delegates will be encouraged to bring their own cases to support lively discussion.

Learning Objectives

The workshop will help you to:
(1) identify links between developmental unmet needs, entrenched schemas and coping styles, in order to build a transdiagnostic mode formulation.
(2) identify priorities when using a Schema Therapy model within a time-limited framework – balancing cognitive and experiential interventions while keeping clients with histories of trauma within their Windows of Tolerance.
(3) integrate and adapt the change techniques of chair work, imagery rescripting and empathic confrontation to tackle specific schemas and modes.
(4) draw on a limited reparenting stance to refine attunement, strengthen collaboration and alliance within the therapeutic relationship
(5) ultimately support clients to bolster and be guided by their Healthy Adult mode.

Training Modalities

This is an experiential workshop with live and video demonstrations.

The BACP Low Intensity SIG are interested in the impact of clinical contact hours on Low Intensity/Wellbeing Practitioner wellbeing. This questionnaire contains six multi-choice questions and a free text box for you to share your experiences. The answers to these questions will help the BABCP SIG plan how to meet CPD topics and other developments within the SIG.  The SIG hope to produce a write up of the answers to this questionnaire to be shared with SIG members and to be used in training.
