Working with Panic Disorder with or without Agoraphobia at Low Intensity CBT level

Sam Torney

Wednesday 21 January 2026

Introduction

Panic Disorder can be characterised as repeated, intense attacks of anxiety, in conjunction with a fear of further attacks occurring.  Symptoms can be instant, without an identifiable trigger, or can be combined with an intense fear of busy places and/or outside spaces (Agoraphobia). The NICE Guidance for common mental health disorders suggests “individual facilitated self-help” as one of the recommended treatments for mild to moderate Panic Disorder.

The event will be equivalent to 2.3/4 hrs of CPD.

Content

This workshop will consider the elements that make up effective treatment at low intensity CBT level for Panic Disorder, with or without Agoraphobia. It will discuss how to identify Panic Disorder, and how symptoms may differ when Agoraphobia is or isn't present.

The webinar will include an overview of the research into Low Intensity Interventions for Panic Disorder. We will discuss making the most of your low intensity tool kit, and when to use which interventions to support recovery, including an overview of Exposure and Habituation, Cognitive Reconstructing, and Behavioural Experiments. Finally, the workshop will include tips and support for creating an effective hierarchy that is collaborative, and will consider cultural and social aspects when treating Panic Disorder.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop attendees should be able to:
• Identify the symptoms of Panic Disorder, and how these can differ when presenting with/without Agoraphobia
• Provide a rationale for working with Panic at Low Intensity level
• Understand the tools in the Low Intensity Tool Kit that can be used for Panic Disorder
• Create an effective and achievable hierarchy for Exposure and Habituation work, or Behavioural Experiments

Training Modalities

This training will include didactic content, polls, Q&A and reflective exercises.
