Introduction
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming behavioural healthcare, offering clinicians new tools to support client care, reduce administrative burden, and improve therapeutic engagement. Yet for many therapists, the question remains: where do I start?
This webinar offers a practical guide for clinicians seeking to navigate AI ethically and confidently. Designed specifically for therapists working in public and third-sector settings, it focuses on tools that enhance, but not replace, the human elements of care.
The session will cover key clinical applications of AI such as documentation support, session summaries, measurement-based care, and digital interventions. We will explore ethical and professional considerations, including bias, consent, and clinical responsibility. Real-world examples will illustrate how AI tools can be integrated thoughtfully to support decision-making and improve outcomes, while maintaining trust in the therapeutic relationship.
Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of when and how AI may be appropriate for their practice, as well as a framework for ongoing evaluation.
The event will be equivalent to 2hrs of CPD.
Content
• Overview of current AI tools used in behavioural healthcare.
• How AI can reduce clinician burden (e.g. documentation, progress tracking).
• Case examples of AI supporting therapeutic decision-making.
• Practical strategies to maintain clinical responsibility and therapeutic alliance.
• Identifying ethical risks: confidentiality, consent, over-reliance.
• Addressing bias and health equity in AI-enabled tools.
• Decision-making frameworks for selecting and using digital tools.
• Clarifying when AI is helpful, and when it is not.
• Review of the evidence base for popular tools currently in use.
• Emphasis on clinician empowerment and critical thinking.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe at least three current AI applications relevant to therapeutic work.
2. Identify at least two ethical risks associated with AI in mental healthcare and strategies to address them.
3. Explain how AI-enabled tools can support therapeutic processes while maintaining client trust.
Training Modalities
The instructor will use a diverse set of teaching modalities to engage participants and support practical learning. These will include didactic content presented with slides, real-world clinical case examples to illustrate key concepts, polls, brief self-reflective prompts to help participants consider how the material applies to their own clinical practice, and a live question-and-answer segment to encourage direct interaction.
