Introduction
The last ten years have witnessed a revolution in the way that we think about mental health difficulties, with a shift towards so-called transdiagnostic approaches that traverse the traditional nosological boundaries enshrined within current psychiatric taxonomies such as the DSM-5.
The event will be equivalent to 2.3/4 hrs of CPD.
Content
This half-day workshop will discuss the conceptual and practical problems with the traditional psychiatric model. The case for a transdiagnostic alternative will be rehearsed and the leading theoretical contenders briefly reviewed. The implications for assessment and intervention within psychology will be developed and the emerging suite of transdiagnostic therapies reviewed. The barriers and drivers to adopting this approach will be fully explored.
Learning Objectives
• The conceptual and practical difficulties with the current psychiatric nosological systems such as the DSM
• The advantages and disadvantages of the transdiagnostic approach and a review of the leading transdiagnostic paradigms
• A summary of the emerging transdiagnostic psychological therapies
• The barriers and drivers to adopting a transdiagnostic psychological approach to assessment and intervention
