Liz Kell

Tuesday, 3 March 2026

Introduction

PWPs undertake a large number of assessments within NHS Talking Therapies services, including assessments of people with presenting problems PWPs are not trained to work with. This webinar will consider how PWPs work within their core assessment structure to effectively gather key information and use their interpersonal competences to support collaborative treatment decisions and signposting and referrals onwards.

The event will be equivalent to 2 hrs of CPD.

Content

The workshop will focus on the function and purpose of PWPs assessments for the benefit of all patient presentations, including those which may not be straightforward. The application of assessment structures will be considered in relation to different presentations PWPs commonly assess but do not go on to treat. This will include complex and severe mental health presentations, and other presenting problems which may result in the patient being referred or signposted to an alternative service. The function and effectiveness of information gathering, information giving and shared decision making will be explored. There will be focus on interpersonal competences in the management of difficult conversations to support referrals and signposting to other services, managing expectations and ensuring effective patient outcomes.

By the end of the workshop participants will learn to:

• Consideration of application of interpersonal competences to enable shared-decision making and difficult conversations
• Support to improve confidence in assessments of presentations PWPs are not trained to treat
